BUDDY JAY’S JAMAICAN JAZZ BAND Anywhere I Travel LP

Saxophonist Buddy-Jay Kieffer leads a mighty band through an exploration of 1960’s Jamaican style jazz music and beyond. Since the bands inception in Portland Oregon in 2012, Buddy and the band have been wowing audiences with their high energy, creative, and often somewhat unpredictable live shows. They elaborate on the original sounds from the golden era of Jamaican music which include Mento, Calypso, Ska, Rocksteady, and early Reggae and Dub. They combine these sounds with a myriad of other styles like Latin Jazz, Afrobeat, American Jazz, and Kompa to create something truly unique and powerful. They have shared the stage with so many other great artists since the bands inception: Winston Jerett , Sister Nancy, The Skints, The Bandulus, Norma Frasier, Vernon Maytone, Sister Carol, and Monty Neysmith just to name a few. It’s the deep respect for the original music combined with their ability to push the music forward to new places and new heights that truly sets them apart as a band. When it came to choosing a name for the band, Buddy decided to use the words “Jamaican Jazz” instead of the usual “Ska” , in order to differentiate the band and show respect for the roots of the music. Ska is Jamaican Jazz after all.

2015 saw the release of their first self titled full length album to the delight of musical audiences around the world. It was recorded much like many jazz records, with very minimal overdubs to capture that “live” sound. In 2019 they released a split EP with The Cascadians (another band Buddy played in at the time) featuring two dub tracks. Then in 2021 they released their second full length record entitled “Up All Night” which featured a wide variety of styles and brought them even more international attention through radio play and record sales. Now we are proud to release the band’s third full length record on Jump Up – titled “Anywhere I Travel” – and the buzz is building around its release! One thing is for sure: this band always brings the fire and never plays a room without a dance floor. Stay tuned, because Buddy-Jay is here to stay!
