THE TIGHTS TV,WORK & BED LP
Limited edition of 250 copies.
The Tights are an English punk rock band from Worcestershire who formed in 1977.
Original members of the band are:
Malcolm Orgee (vocals)
Rob Banks (guitar)
Barry Island (bass guitar and keyboards)
Rick Mayhew (drums) (Hodge replaced Rick in 2004)
The Tights were the first band to be released on Cherry Red Records in 1978. They made
two singles with the label, the first, ‘Bad Hearts’ reached number 6 in the independent charts.
The second single ‘Howard Hughes’ reached number 4. Both singles were recorded at
Millstream Studios, Cheltenham, produced by John Acock.
After The Tights played several gigs in London during the late ’70’s, including Dingwalls and
The Marquee Club (at its original location on Wardour Street) the band split-up, though they continued collaborating on several unrelated projects.
Nearly 30 years later, in 2004, The Tights played a reunion gig at Drummonds in Worcester. As a result of this, and the renewed interest, the band felt there was unfinished business as far as gigging and recording went.
‘TV, WORK & BED’ was recorded and engineered by Garry Low at Glow Studios in Malvern,
and mixed by Simon Duckworth at Simon Says Studios, London. Two of the tracks on the album, ‘No Life’ and ‘I Can’t Sing (about what you are)’, were written in 1977 but were not released at the time.
Asked why they turned to punk the band say:
“As soon as Punk Rock came along it was something I instantly identified with, despite the
fact we were hated by the mainstream population - I have the scars to prove it!” (Malcolm)
“At 17 it meant everything to me, change, belief, separatism, lots of fun.” (Rob)
“To get rid of pent up energy and anger at society under fucking Thatcher.” (Hodge)
“I think the fact that punk was so vilified by the press made it seem dangerous and exciting,
like joining a terrorist group…I wanted in!” (Barry)
